You don’t have to worry, even though removing nail polish from the carpet can be a difficult task – it’s not impossible. There are several simple ways to do this with household products.

Here are some strategies to calm the nerves:

Drops of fresh and pure nail polish Fresh spilled material

Method A – If you just spilled your nail polish and panicked to dry, here is a quick and easy method you can use. Take a nasty knife and scrape it off so you don’t spill nail polish. (use a spoon for large spills)

If you have spilt most of the carpet, take a dry paper towel and absorb the rest as much as possible. Gently pat the dyed area and continue with the new pieces of fabric until you are as wet as possible.

Then spray the affected area with hairspray and dab the wet area with a clean cloth or towel.  Repeat this process until the nail polish stain is completely gone.

Method B – Another way to remove fresh nail polish from a carpet is to cover the stained area with water and spray the polish over it. Use about a tablespoon of alcohol to rub the stain and then scrub the carpet with a soft brush for about a minute.

While scrubbing, continue to add water if necessary until the stain is removed from the carpet. Repeat this process until the carpet is completely free of stains.

This oil spill is the strongest of the two. If you spilled something and forgot, or if your child or pet spilled the bottle and now you’re stuck with a dried up mess on your carpet. These methods will eliminate these hard carpet leaks.

Method A – Start by scraping off the dried nail polish from the mat and get as much as possible. A straight edge razor is also useful for working on tighter carpets, such as dense carpets.

Vacate excess nail polish. This strategy will help to avoid confusion in the future.

After removing excess nail polish, spray this area with hairspray and a few tablespoons of nail alcohol. (If you have a light carpet, you can also use baking powder or cooking salt to remove the stain, the abrasive texture makes rubbing quicker)

Let the mixture soak in for a minute and wipe the area with a small, soft brush like a toothbrush. After brushing your teeth for a few minutes, gently pat the area with a tissue or paper towel and see how much nail polish you have removed from the mat. Continue this process until the stain has completely disappeared.

Method B – Using the same strategy as before, remove as much excess nail polish as possible with a knife or blunt spoon if the leak is large. Keep the pieces of nail polish in one place and suck them up when you’re done.

Take a standard window cleaner such as Windex and soak it with a sponge. Wipe the stain with the abrasive side of a damp sponge and rinse regularly with warm water. Thoroughly dry the area and repeat the process until the stain has disappeared.

Points to watch out for spills of nail polish

This stain is unique and there are a few things to think about when you try to clean it.

  • Only use an acetone-free solvent.
  • Make sure that the lacquer used does not contain tea tree oil, which can stain coloured carpets.
  • Never use products containing bleach or hydrogen peroxide on dark carpets, as these will discolour the colours.
  • Do not rub wet stains with nail polish, as the stain will only spread further over the carpet.
